I'm putting together a Dark Fantasy RP from a very old idea I've been working on for a very long time. Mordugrad This is where I'm going to put all the long winded answers lore and racial descriptions. Races: Human: -Minority approx. 10% of world population. -60-100yr life span. -Produces stronger magic users than other races per capita. -Is at consistent war with Corpa. -The first race. -Caused the Fall of Mordugrad. -Allied with the Roe-Lian. -Has experience and talent for dealing with Sorrows. -Commonly discriminated for ancient accusations. Lomalum: -7-8ft tall, 300-500lbs -Thick hide like skin. -Known for masonry, and metal work. -Exceptional builders. -Actions dictate rank and social hierarchy. -Defensive fighters relying on heavy armor and attrition tactics in most large scale battles. -lifespan is 60-150 years. -Close ally to the Thusians providing a small guardian force to the Thusian bridges. -The Lomalum and the Corpa have a long standing cease fire neither desires full scale war against the other. -Twins are extremely common in Lom children. -Are ruled by a coalition of Guilds the leaders forming a Senate. -Actions trump words. -Soldiers have standardized training in magic for group spells. But there are elite soldiers that are allowed their own methods. -Lomalum are great agriculturalists and farmers owning some of the largest farms. -They are seen as straightforward people but that is not entirely true. -The Lomalum are the most direct threat to the Corpa as a nation. Thusian: -4'-5'5"ft tall androgynous species, so much so that male and females are difficult to discern. -450-500yr life span - rough resemblance-Are the chief suppliers and artisans for Neth Crystal. -Have little magical ability without reliance on Neth Crystals. -Small stature makes them ill suited for physical combat but rely on agility and ranged weapons. -Have an unfounded reputation for being promiscuous. -Live in harmony with several Aethirial and Nethirial beings. - Are home to the only established magic based academy where all are welcome that prove to be at mage efficiency or better. -The Galyian Academy is also home to the largest library in the world. - Are known for Neth crystal technology and selling magic based goods and their extensive trade network. -Thusians are often excepted by most races as they take a neutral stance but have very close ties to the Lomalum politically and historically. Corpa: -6'-7' average height 180-300lbs various skin colors with grey tinge. Black carbon based teeth for sheeting flesh and cracking bone. -200-250yr life span 20yr life expectancy. -physically imposing partly due to their magic is naturally inverted -theu aren't as powerful with offensive or projectile magic though enhancement and self imposed magic is their strength. -they are flesh eaters and hunt other races capture or killing as needed raiding settlements from land and sea. -have preference for cold weather and high altitude. -have a very structured society and rigid social hierarchy. -murder and betrayal is common place and a part of rising through the ranks. -They rarely travel I to other lands save for a few brave souls which are often persecuted. -not all Corpa are monsters. - To maintain food stock captured humans are made slaves and farmed as livestock, this life under the right master is actually quite luxurious until it's gruesome conclusion. -There are Corpan rebels that free humans and refuse sentient food. -Corpan Royalty are often exceptionally powerful beings having fought for their position. - During Feast seasons the Corpa are divided by royal houses and attack other races as separate forces. There are ten royal families but only two of note. -Cybbil Latante and Raum Voux lead the largest armies in among their kind and rule on separate continent's. Ikesk Roe-lian And more... Magic- Under construction.... Feel free to ask questions I the mean time.

Okay so biggest question:
What's the differences between each race, appearance and natural abilities?

The Lomallum, giants. They are on average 7-8 feet tall and between 500-1500lbs of thick skinned brute. Something like a rhino meets a komodo dragon. They are craftsmen, stone workers, black smiths primarily. Not combative by any means, the Lomallum prefer defensive tactics thick walls heavy armor and attrition. Trying to get past a Lomallum shield wall isn't easy. They're society is based on merits, the works one accomplishes through out their life dictate rank. Words hold very little weight in Lomallum society. The Thusians, intermediaries between mortal and spiritual beings. Thusians are long lived and have little ability to wield magic yet are perfect vessels for spiritual beings, Djinn Sorrows and Undynes almost always take a thusian host because the thusian soul doesn't generate as much energy as those of other races. This is due to over exposure to Neth-Crystal since they're entire society is powered by it. They abide by strict city rules to avoid another Mordugrad. They are divided into three clans based on belief. Those that serve the Djinn the Sorrows or the Thusian Council. They are androgynous I appearance bearing stripes tails and pointed ears. The Roe Lian, forest dwellers. Native American meets druid barbarians. Born with an innate equilibrium for nature. Short lived but quick studies they live for an average of 40 years. They behave like a pack in terms of pecking order but communicate well with one another. They pick a profession young and stick to it until death. Those that reach their 30th are sent away to wander the world. The Corpa, a race of cullers. Aristocracy meets militants. Basically French oppulance with a little Spartan citizen soldiers. These creatures are built to kill and devour but they took to it as an art. Their seasons consist of three periods, war/farming other races but they do not seek to conquer because that would starve their people. The next is the banquet season, the put on galas and engage in no warfare or harm inward or out. Then there is the inward cull, they engage in murderous politics and feast on the weak while keeping their own numbers in check. They are humanoid but dark hair with large mouths with many cutting and crushing teeth. Think of a human faced shark. The Ikesk, a group of sea fairing creatures, collectively squid/octopus like humanoids. They rarely take to land but make up the majority of the merchant trade and the recovery of things lost at sea. They can grow as large as a man or even to the point of a medium ship. Logical and fair in trade. Humans are the most magically flexible and have the greatest starting potential. But they're not well liked and their population is the lowest of all the races. Pssst they almost ended the world. Ignore THUSIAN and CORPA as I have redesigned them. The pic is 7years old

These are all... weirdly sexy looking. Do the Ikesk have ships or just swim?

I'm just wondering here. Are there any minor kingdoms for the humans, or are they all destroyed or nearly overrun? It's important for my character's background.

Sry I've a certain aesthetic I can't seem to get away from when it comes to anatomy Yes The Ikesk have ships but they usually travel underwater via skiffs and pack-whales... but they also offer to guard ships. From large predators. Humans have their own kingdoms and infra structure the Corpa leave such things completely intact in order to maintain the 'crop between seasons.

History Mordugrad
It was and is the seat of power for this world. The oldest city and once the largest but it destroyed itself via over mining. Old cities propagate life and death in massive amounts which are the chief resources of magic. But when they grind together they produce crystallized magic which bleeds into the ground like any ore. I'll get into the magic system later. Anyway this cities original name was lost after the ground beneath it gave away. So it's like the grand Canyon only something took up residence in this dead city because mass amounts of disembodied souls tend to warp together when they are of a similar emotion or thought. This rather drew out a death god
Continuing... That FALL of Mordugrad made this monster crater of broken buildings and bones the seat of a God seeing as mortals had gone and thrown off the balance of life and death. Something Thurat (death God) cannot abide. In this universe Death is a very controlled methodical and predictable thing and inevitable. While Life Elysima (another God) is a chaotic random thing fighting against the stagnation and control of Death. They both take many forms but Life prefers that of a feathered Dragon, and death as a gigantic Serpent.
These two live as far apart on the planet as possible. Okay , so with the FALL which is an important Era in history the true gods came to the world to restore balance. Mordugrad was sealed for a time beneath an oil like lake that stood as still as glass trapping every treasure of the old world within. Within the Black lake stands a single castle at its center. Thurat wishing to be known.
Life on the other hand made no grand appearance but rather travelled and altered life. Giving birth to several races by altering the refugees of Mordugrad into something more.
Humans became a hated minority. Those not changed thought to be without the gods blessing

My character's background is a royal protector. She has defended the ruler of the kingdom with her life and as a result, suffered many injuries which strengthened her soul.
The current events, the kingdom is under attack and is inevitably brought to ruin. The only survivor of the royal family is the infant son, her Heir to the the throne. She takes the child and fights her way out, escaping what would have been certain death.
Could that work?

Well if it were an outlying kingdom it is possible Corpa dontvtend to destroy or ruin kingdoms just harvest a few healthy ones. Humans are cattle and entertainment. Corpa love war and decadence. So it's possible she survived a harvest yes.

Awesome.
Also. In the Dark Souls universe, some powerful weapons with special properties are created by souls of powerful beings. Is this going to be a thing too?

Not quite it's a rare practice and normally unrequired due to how magic works in this universe.

the soul can be trained like a muscle to hold transfer and recharge more energy. Still that only gets you half way. The method of using it is called a Focus. A Focus is a method of meditation that behaves like hyper focus (ever seen someone with ADHD zone out and do something amazing but miss absolutely everything else around them?) Anyway a Focus is a task or method to meditate. A blacksmith hammering in a rhythm as he works, a musician playing the violin, a warrior wielding a sword, a writer with quill in hand. These actions fused with will emotion and concentration connect to their soul unleashing their own abilities. Most focus' fall under one of five schools:
Scrawlers: they draw write and or mark themselves. The meaning of the symbols usually self taught. Even tattooist and rune makers cam be Scrawlers. Most Scrawlers prepare ahead of time with traps books or enchanted items or creatures summoned. Though some can carve glyphs words ect. into anything with the write tool lol
Martials: any form that focuses on physical movement and gestures. Warriors craftsmen dancers ect... trained and specific movements of yhe body translates into the desired result. Often combat oriented style in the moment and fast. Doesn't leave time to think complicated spells.
Chanters: singers, poets, priests, politicians. Those that use their words as weapons. The most elaborate of focuses, allowing for complicated spells at range. Though time consuming.
Instrumentals: those that require a specific tool, or instrument. Mostly musicians and craftsmen These welders require that they be in constant motion to focus, the act of using their chosen instrument, the sound, the rhythmn, the feel it goes into their focus drawing out the most possible power though it is very difficult to use since one can rarely defend themselves or stop half way through this tiring method. It is the hardest to master because one can easily over use it and that can be fatal.
Lastly: the Dreamers: they need entry be asleep but these are rare people that need merely think about what they need to do. These are among the most powerful and fastest magic weilders but it is rare for someone to have that level of focus.
That's my magic system in a nut shell but doesn't cover the magical beings.
The Roe are loosely organized There is a main settlement where the young live and learn with a chosen group of elders. The rest of the old are set to wander. This settlement is like theur capital. Tge other groups are many as are their purpose some hunt others hire out as mercenaries and guides, there are healers and traders. Each of the vagrant bands is autonomous whom ever is in charge decides what they do the only rule is once a year they return to the central village to collect the younglings ready to choose a tribe. So yes some tribes deal with other races quite a lot.

Martial would suit my character. The idea of her magic would have been fire. Like her movements in combat (attacking, dodging etc.) ignite the air. Example: she swings her sword in a wide arc and half a second later, the air where the sword slashed through explodes into flames which has a little more range than her sword.
Could this work?
|
|
|
Post by Snoe on Apr 10, 2017 22:37:17 GMT
Yep Martial included any focused movement sword strikes included. The only limit to magic ability is available power and skill in using it. Potency and talent has a lot to do with ones emotions and mental state as a matter of control and amplification.

Post by DodoDestroyer on Apr 10, 2017 22:42:37 GMT
Since her Strongest emotions come from her loyalty and conviction, also her mental state is very secure, I'd say when she is fighting a serious battle or one that the hair's life depends on is where her magic thrives greatly. If it's a little skirmish or opponents of low skill, she won't call upon it and just rely on her swordsmanship.

Your personality act as an efficiency modifier A manipulative person would be able to cast control based magic with less coat to themselves.

Hmm, her personality is disciplined and iron willed. How would this affect her magic?

Reinforcement spells would be easier because she could relate to such solidness. Or anything of a solid nature... ei) rock earth steel

Hm. Perhaps an unbreakable poise, like she could easily deflect a heavy attack from a Lomallum with the use of spells.
But as the fight becomes desperate for her, the fire magic awakens due to how passionate she is to defend her Heir to the very last blow and her will refusing to keep her down, similar to a flame that refuses to burn out.

My idea is a person who only cares about magic. He wants to learn everything he can about it the how to increase the power of one's soul, the Neth crystals, and Mordugrad. Scrawlers seemed the most interesting to me can you give me a little more about them? Also his personality would be methodical, he is an intelligent man and he looks at his surroundings as puzzles meant to be solved. So what kind of magic works with that character?
