Name: Ishnel
Nicknames: Falcon Whisperer, Seeker
Titles: (Former) Head of the Spirit Whisperers, (Current) Cora Superior
Age: 970 (physical age approximately 38)
Species: Forest Elf
Faction (Loyalist, rebel, etc.): Laethyr
Gender: Female
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 127 lbs
Hair: Long dark brown hair, usually neatly braided back.
Eyes: a dark greenish brown
Scars/handicaps: A deep scar on her left shoulder from a childhood accident that ended up leaving her completely paralyzed in her left hand. Many smaller scars from falcons landing on her bare forearms over the years.
Distinguishing features: See Scars/Handicaps
Dress: Regardless of where she is going she will always have a heavily reinforced arm guard on her left arm to keep her hand somewhat straight looking and sturdy. Typically she uses this arms for her falcons to rest on now that she’s lost use of her hand.
In terms of day to day clothes, she wears what is typical of the older Forest Elves, dressing in dark greens and browns as a way of blending into their surrounds. Her footwear is light, but with a good grip on the bottom for climbing. Her right hand is uncovered when she is going about her business as a government official, but it is covered in a leather glove if she is heading out to the forest floor or performing work that requires her to move.
When meeting with the other elves for official business she tends to dress with slightly more colors, adding dark reds or purples to her wardrobe as accents to her clothes. She will also decorate her hair with feathers as a symbol of strength and visibility in honor of her position.
Skills:
- Expert in Falconry, Falcon Care and Falcon Breeding
- Climbing
- Potion/Tonic Making
- Spirit Whispering
- Public Speaking
- Stealth/camouflage
- Hunting/Snaring
Training: In her younger years before her accident Ishnel was trained in Archery and Falconry, though unfortunately the former skill is now no longer useful to her. She takes great pride in her Falconry abilities and has continued to hone her skills for over 900 years. After her injury she received much training in the ways of the spirits and potions making.
Relationship status: Married
Family:
Ilkner (Husband): Currently 923 years old (physically age is about 37). He is the village’s current Head Scout/Hunter and while he’s never had patience for politics, he tends to try and keep up to date for his wife’s sake (though if you ask him, it’s about time they started picking the next head so he can finally retire). Having been younger than his wife, he still looked like a young teenager when she was paralyzed. While many had given her space after the injury to try and cope with her loss, Ilkner had all but bombarded her with talk of falcons, insisting that she’d cheated him out of the archery match he’d so desperately wanted, (She’d all but shamed him in shooting the trick shots, though he claimed it was because of the unfair height advantage she had) and if she could not shoot with him anymore then they’d compete with falcons. Looking back he’s easily embarrassed over how insistent and tactless he was at the time, but he’ll endure the occasional embarrassment since Ishnel always seemed to smile when she remembers that time, even if it is usually at his expense.
When he finally passed her in height and looked close to her own physical age he’d started trying to court her more seriously, or rather she finally started to take his approaches more seriously once he’d finally lost his baby face. He started making friendly bets that turned arguably very friendly as time went on. Loser has to make the other a stamina potion. Loser has to make the other a feather hair ornament. Loser has to make dinner. Loser has to kiss the winner. Loser has to propose. Suffice to say he lost most of their contests, but he never seemed to mind much.
They got engaged around the time he was 240ish and she was 267ish and married about 4 years later. They had a son Lemes when they were 433 and 450 respectively.
Lemes (Son): Currently 520 (physical age 29) and married to his wife Sessla. Despite his parents love of Falcon’s he’s always found the birds tedious, loud and obnoxious, preferring anything where they are not. Despite his intense dislike of them he’s actually highly skilled at falconry and is a strong proponent of the idea that disliking something is not the same as being unskilled at it. He’ll never admit it, but those darn birds helped him get his wife and he still refuses to thank them! Foul tempered and impatient by forest elf standards he wants nothing more than to succeed his father as Head of the Hunter as he considers no one more fit to carry our his father’s legacy than him. While the other hunters acknowledge he is skilled in what he does, they definitely question if the life of politics is really meant for him, many seem to believe he will be passed over for Sharita. He is immensely proud of his mother and has never looked as humbled as the day it was announced she would be Cora Superior since then. Despite what anyone else tells him, he believes he must achieve greatness like his parents.
Sessla (Daughter-in-Law): Currently 518 (physically age 28/29) and married to her husband Lemes. Not much younger than Lemes she’s one of the few who can say they aged with him proper through childhood. While her affinity with falcons can be considered lacking compared to her husband, her knowledge of potions and healing has served her well in assisting her mother-in-law. Many in the village believe that she will take over when Ishnel retires, though Ishnel herself always complains that Sessla is far too gentle to properly train the falcons.
Shutse (Granddaughter): A mere 30 years old (physically aged 10), Shutse is the only child of Sessla and Lemes. She can commonly be found clinging to her mom’s leg in excitement when she goes to visit the falcons, much to her dad’s displeasure. She’d started her real studies in falconry just before her grandma’s appointment to Cora Superior. Though the two haven’t had much chance to practice together, Ilkner frequently takes Shutse out to play with the birds so they can show grandma how good she’s gotten when Ishnel has the time to join them again.
Job: Cora Superior/Falcon Breeder
Goal: Protecting Laethyr from harm so that her granddaughter and the younger elves will never have to personally know the harsh reality of war and major conflict.
Hardship: Protecting Laethyr while maintaining good relations with other countries.
Greatest Fear: That someone will threaten her family as a way of getting to her
Strongest Trait: Calmness
Weakest Trait: Disdainful
Idioms:
“The spirits are mysterious things. They’re never where you want them, but they’re always where you need them.”
“If I wanted to hear unintelligible screeching I would have gone home to my fledglings already. Now sit down or contribute something useful.”
Self image: A relic of an older age who should be thinking about retirement, not world affairs
Reputation: Strict but fair, she is someone old enough to appreciate and seek to maintain peace, while having the will and patience to act and defend those she has taken under her wing when the times call for it.
Sense of humor: Lovingly making fun of her family and those she’s close to.
Extra:
- As Cora Superior many of her policies have been rather isolationist in nature. She has no desire to go to war, but she will not leave her allies to die and has thus offered support in terms of resources rather than soldiers
- Ishnel is considered the expert and authority among the Forest Elves when it comes to intermingling the use of spirit magic with animals
- She has a large flock of falcons that she uses to pass along messages or otherwise patrol the woods. They’re typically referred to as Ishnel’s Falcons as opposed to the ones she is merely raising.
- After centuries of work, many of the falcons she releases back into the wild have raise their young to follow the same commands she taught their ancestors. As such, the local falcons tend to fly down and land when the Forest Elves whistle to them even if they’ve never been properly trained to do so.
- Her intensive training in spirit magic has allowed her to look through the eyes of her falcons and share their line of sight, though only within a limited range. She is the only Forest Elf to have successfully done this. Her ability to do so is a secret kept within the village.
- Most, if not all, Forest Elves know how to check if a falcon is part of Ishnel’s personal flock or not and will search for one when they are far away and need to alert the village of news.
