Here's an idea I have been working with for awhile. I have a world built, notable characters and species, and lore. It was heavily based on Christian Demonlogy and Culture, but to save religious conflict on here it won't be the case. The Angels, Demons and other will be custom and adaptable. It's very heavily inspired by Darksiders.
Judgement day commenced 50 years ago... But what was written in the Bible was only predictions and theories, regardless if it was guided by faith or lunacy. The age of humanity was over, no ascension to heaven was given to the pure and everybody was left on earth, humans were left confused until they came to a dreaded conclusion... Judgement day wasn't to judge who was destined for heaven or hell, it was to judge who would rule the next age.. The humans were caught in a seven year war between God's army of angels and Lucifer's legion of demons. Demons were the catalyst of nightmares, twisted and hellish sadists that lust for power and malicious control. They are unpredictable, dangerous and lack honour. The Angels to what was thought to be Guardians of humans with passion and kindness, turned out to be enforcers of brutal justice by any means. While they did their best effort to avoid human casualties, the belief of angels protecting mankind were false... For the war, they were tasked to vanquish the demons.
Seven years later, countless casualties and more than half of the world's lands were decimated and burned down into a ruined wasteland. Human's population was reduced into the millions, both angels and demons suffered terrible losses and the war never reached a certain conclusion... With the demon's numbers greater than any other, they claimed most of the barren wastelands and damaged cities as their territories, the most notable is former California and the United States of America now renamed the Deadlands. Sanctuaries in the surviving civilisations were erected by the Angels as Strongholds for their little numbers and some refugees, but not all were accepted into the Strongholds, for these were their remaining compounds for combat and not shelters, whose goals are to expand and push back and claim Demon territories, they are highly defensible and only overwhelming, extraordinary power or force can pose as a threat. The remaining places were newly erected settlements for humans and the broken angels that were exiled. Most had a rocky government or diminishing resources, but it was the best that the humans could hope for these days. The world has turned into a state of post-apocalypse full of demons, ghouls and malevolent spirits of the damned. The Age of Armageddon has begun.

Notable Factions outside of Angels, Demons and surviving humans.
Demon-Runners: the hunters are a faction of humans that have volunteered their lives to scavenge in the Deadlands for valuable supplies, exotic crafting materials only found in the malformed wasteland and the slim possiblility of survivors. They are usually armed with divine weaponry dropped by angels that fell in battle or the rare creations made from the bones and essence of dead demons. The only things capable of killing a demon or Angel, mundane weapons only cause injuries that slow them down to heal from them. The faction takes any volunteers fit for duty, but only those who have a death wish or the insanely brave would do so. A Demon-Runner's career, and life, are very short lived for the majority.
Broken Angels: Broken Angels are the status given to divine beings of heaven that were stripped of their titles, either exiled by their kin for misconduct or demons forcefully stealing their power. They are usually distinguished and given their name sake due to their mutilated wings. Some broken and horrifically twisted upside down, some lack their brilliant feathers and merely skin and bones, and the most unfortunate have their wings ripped from their backs completely. Never to grow back. These angels still possess their immunity to aging, superhuman strength, agility and endurance but lack the aura that made them a proud soldier of God... Without this aura they lost their immortality, now vulnerable to human made weaponry and disease like any other mortal. They are also incapable of divine miracles and magic of healing, protection and light based projectiles. The Broken are the sufferers of a fate worse than death, never to redeem their former glory. This punishment is given to Angels committing the most unforgiveable war crimes or a cruel execution given by malicious demons. Most of the Broken do not side with any of the three main Factions, seeking their own goals and the tragic few turn feral and mad.
Soulless: The name says it all. These are humans have had their Souls stolen or consumed by a demon. They lose their memories of their past and suffer the curse of undeath, forever treading this godforsaken lands and dying time after time. When a Soulless 'dies', they do not stay dead and revive after sometime has past ranging from a couple of minutes to several hours. Each painful death causes them to lose another small piece of themselves. Their pleasant memories, their humanity and their identity is slowly diminished each time until they lose everything that made them human and become something terrible; an undying man beast that lashes out like a wild animal to all. Their Souls can be regained and their identity restored... As long as they have no descended into feral madness, else the return of their soul gives them the mercy of a permanent death. The only upside to these abominations is their indestructibility and extremely high durability.
Rogue Demon: Rogue Demons are those that separated themselves from Lucifer's legion to seek their own desires. Unlike the lesser demons, these rogues have the intelligence and strong will to become independent from the Demon Lord's control. They like any other; cold, remorseless and selfish. Not all are violent, unhinged sadists because they are easily noticed and quickly eliminated by one of two otherworldly Factions. Rogues are cunning and keep a low profile in the human settlements or wandering through the Deadlands. Their desires vary from absorbing a certain emotion from mortals to stealing away Souls to grow in power and survive. They possess all the powers of a Demon and their abilities are on par with a Broken Angel, as well as only harmed by divine weapons and weapons crafted from demons themselves. Their downside is they belong nowhere and hunted by almost every faction and a constant need to feed their desires to stay alive.
The Horsemen: Not much is known about the four fabled horsemen of the apocalypse, nor if they even exist... They are said to be an elite showing no alliance to either Angels or Demons and their goals are unknown, but do not benefit anybody but themselves. The usual warning is that if you hear the galloping of hooves and very heavy dread overcome you... Run and hide like your life depended on it.

Any questions, feel free to ask. I'm looking into finding a plotline for this world. Building a new settlement, Demon-Runners on a high priority, dangerous mission, a Scouting party of Angels scoping out the Deadlands etc.
